Pop sensation Madonna also known as the queen of pop has created several hits as a singer and songwriter, but she took her time to have children and started embracing motherhood in her 50s.

The singer chose not to have her children in her prime and only fell pregnant with her first child Lourdes Leon in 1996. She met her father, Carlos Leon, in 1994, but their relationship got rocky by 1995, leading to Madonna changing locks to her New York apartment.

Just before the singer was about to separate from Carlos, she discovered she was pregnant, but the two remained on good terms and co-parented peacefully.

Although Madonna took her time with kids, she had always known that she was destined to be a mother and that motherhood would bring her unimaginable healing because she lost her mother at six.

After she welcomed her first child, Madonna knew she wanted to have another one, but she was still affected by some of her past decisions like terminating pregnancies at a young age, which made her wonder if she would have what it takes to be a good parent.

However, in 1998 she met Guy Ritchie, a well-known film director, and in 2000 they welcomed a son, Rocco, who was also Madonna’s last biological child.

Since the singer fell pregnant at an older age, she admitted that her pregnancy with her last-born son was not easy and even described falling pregnant as a big joke that God played on women.

Although she did not mind having a bigger family, she did not want to go through the emotional turmoil for nine months again, but someone presented a way to expand her brood while making a difference.

Madonna revealed that she was approached by a woman who lived in Malawi. She reminded the singer of all her charitable work for children, like, writing children’s books and donating to charities.

The woman made the singer aware of how to get her voice and passion for children to be heard and seen while adopting a child especially as Malawi was experiencing a state of emergency for orphaned kids due to AIDS.

The idea was one the singer could not pass out on; it became a new focus and passion for Madonna; she said, “once I experienced what was going on the first hand, I just got sucked into the whole thing.”

The “Material Girl” singer was grateful for the experience and meaningful connection she made and the opportunity to change children’s life.

In 2006 she and Ritchie adopted their son David. Madonna. She said, “I’ll never forget meeting my son, David. If I could, I would have adopted ten more children. There’s just so many that need parents, and one’s more beautiful and lovely than the next,”

After welcoming David, Madonna added Mercy, born in Malawi in 2006 after she settled her divorce with Ritchie. Her application was reportedly rejected at first but eventually, Madonna got to take Mercy home on June 12, 2009; she also welcomed twins Estere and Stella.

The application process in Malawi is not easy; it requires adoptive parents to live in the country for 18 months and become residents.

Despite Madonna agreeing that the adoption journey is emotional and complicated, she said it was worth it. Now she gets to enjoy “Moana” with her twin daughters and it’s the most joyful time in her life.

Madonna as a Protective Mother

Madonna’s $6.5 million house in Beverly Hills was filled with art from renowned artists like Picasso, Diego Rivera, and Frida Kahlo.

But when her daughter Lourdes was six, she became one of the household’s artists, even though she did not fully agree with how her toddler expressed herself.

The singer revealed that Lourdes once spilled black paint on the carpet. As much as Madonna was frustrated, she realized she could do nothing about it, but the paint splash was not pretty.

Madonna also confessed that she was more of the disciplinarian between her and Ritchie, but his busy schedule didn’t always allow him to be present.

But the singer said he became better even though she clarified that she would have fired him as a father if he had not pulled his socks up because she could not be a tough parent alone.

The “Hung Up” star continued to be protective of her children even when she and Ritchie co-parented. She reportedly wrote an extensive list of do’s and don’t for when the children visited him in London.

Madonna demanded that her children not read newspapers or watch DVDs or television. They must adhere to an organic and vegetarian diet; even the water only had to be of a specific brand.

Even their clothes were not supposed to be of man-made fibers, so the children were only allowed to wear the clothes that Madonna had packed for them. Not to forget that the kids must be sanitized every time they are in public spaces.

The singer also did not want her children to be introduced to any of Ritchie’s female friends or anyone he was attracted to after their separation.

She made it clear that her separation from Richie should not be discussed with the children and that she wanted three to four check-in calls with the kids. Then at bedtime, David should be read the English Rose books written by Madonna.

Madonna Being a Music Icon and a Normal Mother

Madonna is an iconic singer to the public, but she’s just a normal mother to her children. Her Instagram was a mixture of out-of-the-ordinary pictures and normal photos of her children swimming.

But one thing she loves to teach her children is to be appreciative of their privilege. The singer traveled with her children to Malawi, where she adopted them and said they were exposed to kids with significant health issues and low-income backgrounds.

Luckily, Madonna’s lessons were taken in by her children pretty easily; when they arrived home, they thanked her for their lives and expressed gratitude for how privileged they were. Another thing the singer was asked about was how she balances her rebellious musical side with motherhood.

She said whenever she’s recording a song that might not be good for kids’ ears she tells them to wait out, but her kids do not even fathom how much of an iconic performer she is; they just want her to be a normal mom.

Nonetheless, Madonna confessed that she was a strict mother. For instance, she does not allow her children to get tattoos or piercings until they are 18 years old.

But when she’s not on duty, she leaves her outlandish clothing at home and attends parent-teacher meetings in regular outfits that will not grab any attention.

It seems like Madonna’s eldest daughter Lourdes, is taking after her mother’s fashion sense. She once said her style at 13 was horrible, but she has always loved fashion, especially the 80s style that is coming back in style.

The queen of pop is strict about very specific things in her household; for instance, magazines, newspapers, and television are banned because Madonna believes they negatively affect her children’s development.

She reasoned, “TV is trash. I was raised without it; I didn’t miss anything. TV is poison. No one even talks about it around here. We don’t have magazines or newspapers in the house either.”

Another thing the mother of six would not tolerate was her children leaving clothes on the floor. Madonna does not condone any careless behavior, so when her kids do not neatly fold their clothes back into their wardrobes, she takes them away until they learn to take care of them.

Furthermore, the singer does not allow her kids to have phones until they are at a certain age. Her eldest daughter only got her first iPhone when she was 15 years old.

But Madonna giving her kids a phone does not mean she will not take it back; she once took it away from her son Rocco because she believed it affected his studies.

David is 17, and Mercy is 16, but they also had to wait for their turn to get phones, even though their friends already had smartphones.

When her daughter Lourdes was young, Madonna said she would not let her start dating until she was 18, but she quickly realized that she could not control every aspect of their lives.

When Lourdes started dating actor Timothee Chalamet when she was 16, Madonna let her go on a date but on the condition that she had a bodyguard looking over everything.

Like most parents, Madonna does not compromise on education. She’s very strict about homework, and if she ever runs into issues she reminds her children that there are people in the world longing for school, so they must appreciate the opportunity to get an education.

However, Madonna does not only set rules in her house she also does fun activities with her children like seeing a Van Gogh exhibit. She also once shared a picture with her daughters’ Mercy, Stella, and Estere after watching their piano recital and expressed how proud she was of her girls.

The singer has raised children that she is proud of, and she is protective of them at every stage of their lives, but her goal is to lead them into a path of success and happiness.

Madonna’s Kids Don’t Think Shes Cool

One would think having a mother who is one the best performers even at 64 years old would be considered cool and iconic. However, when Madonna visited “The Jimmy Fallon Show,” they raved about all the cool encounters he had encountered with the singer. Fallon said she was among the people to first kiss him on both cheeks.

The host also remembered running into Madonna leaving a party early, and when he asked why she said she had jury duty, something that sounded impossible for someone as famous as her.

The singer did confess that her fame got her out of jury duty; she was told to leave because of causing too much disruption at the court.

As much as Fallon might find that iconic, Madonna confessed that her children never think she’s cool enough and remind her daily of how uncool she is, followed by another reminder not to be basic.

The singer showed up to “The Jimmy Fallon Show” looking nothing like basic; she worked mash Mochino tights, a black bomber jacket with gold embroidered gold dollar signs, and a black Tee under it. She accessorized it with many heavy gold chains and topped it off with grills.

Madonna shared a rare picture of her and all her six children celebrating the holidays in her $15 million New York apartment. Her kids are not between the ages of 26 and 10 and the singer expressed that she was grateful for all of them.
