CASSELBERRY, Fla. – The city of Casselberry is working on a plan to improve pedestrian safety along State Road 436.

The commissioners will convene to discuss the S.R. 436 Improvements Strategy and the city’s upcoming steps to implement the proposed changes. During the meeting scheduled for Monday, this crucial topic will be addressed to enhance the safety and functionality of the road.

Public Works Director Dr. Kelly Brock will present the options for the multi-million dollar project, which is part of Casselberry’s Vision Zero Plan.

“The idea of Vision Zero is to achieve zero deaths and serious injuries on all of our roadways by 2040,” Brock said.

S.R. 436 was chosen as the focal point of safety improvements because of the number of serious crashes involving pedestrians.

Reflecting on extensive data spanning five years, Brock revealed alarming statistics, citing 11 fatalities, 12 serious injuries, and numerous injury-related crashes. The issue at hand is not only excessive speed but also the challenge of accommodating various forms of transportation within the same space.

Among the options for improvements are additional crosswalks, wider sidewalks, and narrower vehicle lanes.

When considering strategies to address these concerns, Brock highlighted the impact of lane width on vehicle speed. By proposing a reduction from twelve-foot lanes to eleven-foot lanes, which still adheres to standard measurements, the aim is to moderate traffic speed and improve overall road safety.

The city has allocated $5.2 million in local funds for the project and has to decide if it will pursue a federal grant for additional funding.

“This grant leverages our local dollars four-to-one; if we have four million dollars to put in, we could potentially get a 20-million dollar project out of that,” Brock said.

The time frame for completion of the project would depend on which funding path the commissioners decide.

The city’s commission meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday.[
