Bodycam shows Ohio State women’s basketball head coach Kevin McGuff being arrested for OVI

Dublin police arrested Ohio State women’s basketball coach Kevin McGuff for OVI on May 6 following a report of reckless driving.

DUBLIN, Ohio — Body camera video released Tuesday shows the arrest of Ohio State women’s basketball head coach Kevin McGuff.

The Dublin Police Department released footage showing McGuff getting arrested and charged with an OVI outside his home on May 6.

Officers responded to a location after receiving a call about a vehicle driving erratically. The caller reported that the vehicle ahead of them hit multiple curbs and even went through a person’s yard.

When officers arrived at the address, which was McGuff’s home address, they found him sitting in the driver’s seat of his vehicle.

Upon arrival, an officer approached the vehicle, which was parked in the driveway, and observed McGuff inside, seemingly struggling to either roll down the window or open the door.

While the officer stood by, he gestured to McGuff to unlock his door. Despite the signal, McGuff persisted in his efforts to open the door for almost two minutes.

The officer then asks if he can open the doors and McGuff says, “yes.”

The officer is heard telling him about the report of his driving and asks him if there was any reason they would have been concerned about his driving.

McGuff responds, “No. Just…”

McGuff told the officer that he was “coming from here, my home” and denied drinking anything or any medical conditions that would have affected his driving.

When asked where he came from, McGuff said he was coming home from having dinner at J Liu. The officer asked him what he had there and McGuff said dinner.

The officer asked what he had to eat or drink and McGuff said nothing.

The officer conducted three in-car tests due to a suspicion that McGuff was impaired, according to the arrest report. They asked him what his highest level of education is and he answered that he had a Master’s degree.

They then had him say the alphabet from letters D to R without singing. The officer repeated instructions three times. The video shows McGuff only saying  “D.” He did not recite any more letters.

They then had him touch the tip of each finger while counting and then reversing direction. The officer wrote in the report that McGuff’s “motor skills were poor, and he could not properly sequence his fingers correctly.”

He was also asked to count down from 63 to 48, but said “63” twice and did not complete the test, video shows.

The officer asked him to step out for more tests and McGuff said, “I know you guys are just doing your job.”

In the report, the officer said he noticed a total of seven out of eight clues during a walking test and three out of four clues for the one leg stand test.

He was then arrested and taken to the Dublin Police Department.

McGuff was asked if he wanted to provide a breath sample and he reportedly refused, the arrest warrant says.

The Ohio State Department of Athletics issued a statement Monday saying that they are aware of the incident involving McGuff.

“The department is in communication with Coach McGuff and monitoring the situation closely. This is an ongoing, personal legal matter, and the department will share additional information at the appropriate time,” the statement read.

McGuff was selected last year as the Big Ten Coach of the Year. Before coaching at Ohio State, he led the Washington Huskies and was the head coach at Xavier for nine seasons.
