The new year kicks off with a bang as ITV‘s hugely-anticipated brand new drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office starts on January 1.
The series is based on true events as it tells the story of Alan Bates and his fight for justice in the wake of the Post Office scandal in the late 1990s.
The scandal saw hundreds of subpostmasters and mistresses working up and down the UK falsely accused of theft, fraud and false accounting by their employer following an IT malfunction.

The official synopsis for the series says: “The drama tells the story of one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British legal history. Hundreds of innocent sub-postmasters and postmistresses were wrongly accused of theft, fraud, and false accounting due to a defective IT system.
“Many of the wronged workers were prosecuted, some were imprisoned for crimes they never committed, and their lives were irreparably damaged by the scandal.”
The four-part drama will feature a whole host of familiar faces with The Long Shadow‘s Toby Jones leading the star studded cast.
Viewers can also expect to see the likes of Katherine Kelly, Amy Nuttall, Julie Hesmondhalgh, Monica Dolan, Lia Williams, Alex Jennings and Will Mellor.
Broadchurch star, Will Mellor, recently appeared on This Morning to discuss his upcoming part in the drama, he said: “I was so angry when I was filming it, and upset. And that helped when I was playing it. I just got into that mindset, and hopefully that comes through.”

The first episode of Mr Bates vs The Post Office will air on ITV1 and ITVX at 9pm on Monday 1st January 2024.
