If you were at all online yesterday, you surely witnessed the outrage after Barbie failed to nab a Best Director Oscar nomination for Greta Gerwig or a Best Actress nom for the movie’s lead, Margot Robbie. Yet, The View‘s Whoopi Goldberg (an Oscar winner herself) thinks all the uproar is unnecessary.
During a discussion about Barbie being “snubbed” by the Academy after it was shut out from multiple categories, Goldberg offered the unpopular opinion that there was no “snubbing” going on at all.
“Here’s the deal: everybody doesn’t win,” Goldberg bluntly told the panel, as Sunny Hostin commented, “You know about the snubs.”
Goldberg retorted, “But they’re not snubs, and that’s what I sort of want to point out.” Referring to Alyssa Farah Griffin‘s earlier remark that Barbie had been “snubbed by the elites,” Goldberg added, “And it’s not the ‘Hollywood elites.’ It’s the entire family of the Academy Awards who vote for Best Picture nominations.”
When she noted, “There are seven to 10 nominations that happen, and you don’t get everything that you want to get,” Hostin said she would have liked to see Ava DuVernay‘s Origin be nominated.
“That was, in my view, a snub, so not everybody gets a prize,” Hostin said. Goldberg reiterated, “But there are no snubs. And that’s what you have to keep in mind. Not everybody gets a prize, and it is subjective. Movies are subjective. The movies you love may not be loved by the people who are voting.”
While Barbie missed out on some key nominations, the film did receive plenty of attention across categories yesterday. When the 2024 Oscars air in March, Barbie will be up for Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), Best Supporting Actress (America Ferrera), Best Original Song (in which it is nominated twice), Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC. The 2024 Oscars will air live Sunday, March 10 on ABC.
