Serena Williams, the youngest sibling in her family, was encouraged by her parents to play tennis. She began practicing the sport at an early age, which allowed her to develop and improve her skills.

Williams started her professional tennis career in 1995 and won her first Grand Slam title four years later. She proved her unmatchable tennis skills by winning gold medals and Grand Slam titles in the following years.

“My belly routine, featuring @olympiaohanian, is live on my YouTube channel,” the American tennis player captioned her video. Her post has since garnered over 105,000 likes and more than 800 comments.

Most people adored her fit body and felt inspired by it. After watching the video clip, another fan commented, “The baby’s gonna be bulked up at birth fighting with these six packs for nine months. Okay, Serena, I’ll go to the gym.”

Why Did Serena Williams Leave Tennis?

Williams left her tennis career to build a family after winning 23 Grand Slam titles and becoming an excellent female tennis player. In her interview with Vogue, the tennis star opened up about her decision.

Williams welcomed her first child with her husband, her daughter, Olympia, in 2017. The tennis star shared, “A lot of people don’t realize that I was two months pregnant when I won the Australian Open in 2017.”

Now, Williams is all set to welcome her second baby, but this time, she isn’t playing her favorite sport. Williams, 41, said it was tough to choose between playing tennis and building a family, but she had to do it. She said:

“I don’t think it’s fair.”

The greatest tennis player of all time, who said she loves being a woman, believes she wouldn’t have to make this difficult decision if she was a man. Since tennis is so close to her heart, Williams felt emotional about leaving tennis and reluctant to discuss it. She confessed:

“It’s like a taboo topic. It comes up, and I start to cry.”

When it comes to the term “retirement,” Williams doesn’t prefer using it for herself. Instead, she wants people to take her move as a transition from tennis to other things, including Serena Ventures and her family.

Leaving tennis and moving towards other things is something that Williams finds very difficult to accept. However, she looks forward to the new chapter of her life where she wouldn’t do what she had been doing for the last few decades.

What Really Happened during Serena’s Childbirth?

After enjoying all the positive attention she received during her first pregnancy, Williams was all set to give birth to Olympia in September 2017, unaware that her birthing experience would become a nightmare.

Williams opened up in an interview with Elle about her near-death experience in the hospital. After giving birth to Olympia, the new mother was in the hospital room with her little one and her husband, Alexis Ohanian, when the unexpected happened.

When Williams woke up after her C-section, she couldn’t feel her legs because they were numb. At that time, the new mom recalled the life-threatening condition she was diagnosed with in 2010, where she had developed blood clots in her lungs. Worried that she might have developed them again, she asked the nurse why they didn’t give her the blood thinner drip.

“The logic for not starting the blood thinners was that it could cause my C-section wound to bleed, which is true,” Williams recounted. Soon, she began coughing and realized she couldn’t breathe. As a result, the strain on her stitches caused them to open up, and the doctors took her in for a restitching surgery.

However, that wasn’t the last surgery Williams underwent during that time. Her medical complications required multiple surgeries before she was allowed to go home. She recalled waking up from the second surgery in the hospital room and feeling like she wouldn’t make it.

Her parents and in-laws were in the room when she thought she would die. She recounted, “They were trying to talk to me, and all I could think was, ‘I’m dying, I’m dying. Oh my God.'”

At that time, the doctors had not scanned her lungs for the blood clot she thought she might have developed. After the second surgery, Williams convinced her doctor to do a CAT scan because she was sure there was a clot in her lung. Soon, the results came in and proved Williams was right.

The tennis star underwent two more surgeries before her health was back to normal. What started as a straightforward C-section became a series of surgeries that exhausted her, but she overcame those tough times with her family’s support.
