The 02 Academy in Sheffield has been forced to shut over concerns about RAAC concrete. Detailed surveys are being carried out following guidance relating to the crumbling concrete, 02 Academy Sheffield has said.

According to the O2 Academy, the venue is closing as a precautionary measure. Detailed surveys are now underway.

RAAC, or Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete, is a form of lightweight concrete which was used in buildings between the 1950s and mid-1990s. It is commonly found as precast panels in roofs, in flat roofs and sometimes in floors and walls.

However, the material is now considered a security risk due to its lifespan of 30 years and lower durability. It is susceptible to structural failure and can decay.

In a statement, the O2 Academy Sheffield said: “O2 Academy Sheffield will be temporarily closed as a precautionary measure while detailed surveys are carried out further to recent guidance relating to RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete).

“O2 Academy Sheffield is a landmark 1960s entertainment venue in the city. The safety of our employees, performers and visitors is of paramount importance, and this cautionary approach is being taken by many other live entertainment buildings and theatres across the country.

“We sincerely apologise for the disappointment this temporary closure will cause. We will share further updates as soon as we are able.”

In a separate statement on their website, the venue added: “Further to recent guidance relating to RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) used in buildings, O2 Academy Sheffield will be temporarily closed as a precautionary measure while we carry out detailed surveys.

“We appreciate this will be very disappointing and we apologise to all those affected by this decision. Our priority is to ensure the safety of all employees, performers and visitors.

“Anyone who has purchased tickets for events impacted by this temporary closure will be contacted directly with further information as we work with event promoters and ticket agents to rearrange dates.”
