A man has been pronounced dead following an incident at a bridge in Barnsley.
The Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) has been contacted following the incident as there was police contact with the man prior to his death, officers have said.
South Yorkshire Police were called to the scene on a bridge over West Way at 12.22pm today (Thursday, November 16) to reports of a concern for the man’s safety. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for several hours following the incident but has since been re-opened. The man’s family has been notified of his death.
A force spokesperson said: “We were called at 12.22pm today to reports of concern for safety of a man on a bridge over West Way in Barnsley. Sadly, a man was pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no suspicious circumstances.
“The man’s family has been notified and the road has now re-opened. As there was police contact with the man before his death, we have notified the Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) about this incident.”
