The case of Mahek Bukhari and Ansreen Bukhari, who were convicted of the killing of two men in 2023, will be featured in a new ITV documentary, TikTok: Murder Gone Viral.

Mahek Bukhari was known as a star on social media platform TikTok, where she had almost 130,000 followers. Her mother, Ansreen, often appeared in her videos alongside her.

However, in 2019, Ansreen began speaking to 21-year-old Saqib Hussain through the video app Azar and exchanged numbers. The pair began speaking everyday and started an extra-marital relationship which lasted for the following three years.

In 2021, the relationship broke down, but Saqib struggled to deal with the rejection and then threatened her. He threatened Ansreen by telling her he would send explicit images to her husband, exposing their affair.

Eventually, Ansreen revealed all to her daughter, Mahek, who decided to take matters into her own hands instead of contacting the police. She turned to one of her friends, Rekan Karwan, who lured Saqib to a meeting by offering to give him £3,000.

Rekan enlisted his friends Raess Jamal, Ameer Jamal, Sanaf Gulummustafa, Natasha Akhtar and Mohammed Patel. On February 11, 2022, the group arrived at a Tesco supermarket car park in Leicester and waited for him.

Saqib arrived, being driven by his friend Hashim Ijazuddin, who did not know what was going on. Once there, the pair quickly left but were pursued in their Skoda by two different cars, a Seat Leon and Audi TT, down the A46.

During the chase, Saqib called 999 and said the car was trying to ram him off the road. Towards the end of the 999 call, the line goes silent and a recovery driver then spotted a car on fire next to a tree.

Two people were found dead in the car.

Eight people were later charged with murder and both Mahek and Ansreen were found guilty of two counts of murder. Rekan Karwan and Raees Jamal were found guilty alongside them.

Natasha Akhtar, Sanaf Gulammustafa and Ameer Jamal were convicted of two counts of manslaughter.

Now, the case will be the subject of ITV’s TikTok: Murder Gone Viral. It will air on ITV1 and ITVX at 9pm.
