Younger brother of Brothers 4 Life gang leader shot dead on Sydney street

A man shot dead on the streets in Sydney’s south-west is the brother of Bassam Hamzy, a convicted murderer and founder of notorious crime gang ‘Brothers 4 Life’, 9News understands.

Police have yet to confirm the victim is Mejid Hamzy, Bassam’s brother.

The dead man was found with multiple gunshot wounds in Condell Park at 7.30am, with police indicating he was killed by two assassins.

Police believe the killers lay in wait for the victim, and killed him with multiple shots outside his home.

9News understands Mr Hamzy was shot on Simmat Avenue, and he staggered to Curtin Place where another one of his friends lived and that’s where he collapsed and died.

There has been a heavy police presence in the area and the riot squad have been walking up and down the streets.

The forensic team have been on the scene and police are now bracing themselves for any retaliation.

NSW Police Superintendent Darren Sly, from Bankstown Police, said detectives are investigating the shooting and a burned out vehicle, which the assassins may have used to escape.

“Two males were seen running from the location,” Superintendent Sly said, and the pair hopped inside a nearby vehicle.

“It would appear that those two males … have been waiting for the male to leave his house this morning.”

Shortly after police were alerted about the shooting, another report came in about a burned out vehicle.

“Police are always worried in circumstances like this, when we have a public shooting, that there could be repercussions,” he said.

Brothers 4 Life gang founder Bassam Hamzy is currently imprisoned at Goulburn Correctional Centre – Australia’s supermaximum jail.

Hamzy has been in prison for more than two decades after he was jailed for the murder of a teenager, Kris Toumazis, outside a Sydney nightclub in 1998.

Since his murder conviction, Hamzy has also been found guilty of running a drug ring from his cell.

He was also involved in a brawl with fellow high-profile inmate Talal Alameddine in October last year.
