Who is Ross McCullam ?

A man today admitted to killing the granddaughter of a vicar, but denied murdering her.

Ross McCullam, 29, is charged with murdering Megan Newborough, 23, on Friday, August 6.


The 23-year-old’s body was found on a country road in Woodhouse Eaves, near Loughborough, the day after her family reported her missing.

The human resources consultant, from Nuneaton, Warwickshire, was reported missing the day before after she failed to return home from an online appointment.


Appearing via a video link from HMP Leicester on Friday, McCullam denied the murder and pleaded guilty to an alternative felony manslaughter, on the grounds of diminished responsibility and loss of control.

Judge Timothy Spencer QC told McCullam:

But the case was postponed until next year, which means he will be tried for murder at Leicester Crown Court.

Judge Timothy Spencer QC told McCullam “Through his guilty plea this morning, he has admitted a very serious matter and a very serious offense.


‘The prosecution does not accept that the case is a case of involuntary manslaughter.

“They say it is a murder case; the jury will have to decide and his trial will take place on March 7.”

Murder

A man has appeared in court to deny the murder of a young Nuneaton woman whose body was found in the Leicestershire countryside.

Ross McCullam of Coalville, Leicestershire, pleaded guilty to an alternative felony manslaughter of Megan Newborough on Friday, August 6.

McCullam did so for reasons of diminished responsibility and loss of control.

Seconds earlier he had pleaded not guilty to the murder of 23-year-old Megan, whose body was found on Charley Road, Woodhouse Eaves, near Loughborough, in the early hours of Sunday, August 8.

Missing

Megan, who worked as a human resources advisor, was initially reported missing to Warwickshire police on 7 August and an investigation by her officers led them to Leicestershire.

McCullam, 29, appeared at Leicester Crown Court via live video link from the prison where he is being held.

Megan’s family watched from the public gallery as the two pleas were presented during the 12-minute hearing.

Gordon Aspden QC, the prosecutor, said the murder declaration “was not acceptable” to the Crown.

Judge Timothy Spencer QC said, “So it will be a trial [for murder].”

Statement

The defendant, from Coalville, Leicestershire, was placed on remand.

Mrs Newborough, from Nuneaton, had been reported missing to Warwickshire Police on 7 August.

In a statement issued shortly after her death, her family said: ‘There are no words to describe how much we as a family are completely heartbroken and devastated.

“Megan was the most generous, loving and caring person and our beloved daughter has been stolen from us.”
