Uruguay defender Jose Maria Gimenez appeared to swing his elbow and hit a FIFA employee on the pitch as he went to protest to referee Daniel Siebert near the tunnel at the end of the final Group H match against Ghana.

Although Uruguay won, they failed to win 3-0, which meant they were eliminated from the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

In the footage, Gimenez can be seen walking towards the referee, amidst the already-present melee of his teammates around the official, and as he approaches a person in a FIFA suit, he raises his elbow and hits him on the back of the head as he continues to walk towards the referee to protest the two penalties that were not awarded.

The controversies

The Uruguayan players focused on two controversial incidents, both at 2-0 (if they had scored any more goals, they would have reached the Round of 16).

One is the penalty claimed for Darwin Nunez midway through the second half and the other, in the 90th minute, was a challenge in which Edinson Cavani was brought down inside the area. The first was reviewed by the VAR and by the referee on the monitor, although he refused to award a spot-kick.

As soon as the referee blew the final whistle, several players, including Cavani and Diego Godin, came to protest to the referee. They were then joined at full speed by Gimenez, with several people in front of him on his way to the referee.

FIFA will now open disciplinary proceedings to analyze the incident and determine whether or not to sanction the player.
