Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez is adamant that the Blaugrana should have won their opening-day duel against Rayo Vallecano.

Xavi blamed his players’ lack of a clinical touch in front of goal for their 0-0 draw with Rayo on home soil in their 2022/23 LaLiga Santander opener.

“It is not easy,” Xavi told the press conference ahead of the duel away at Real Sociedad.

“We have to have humility. The game against Rayo was a footballing disgrace. We deserved to win and we lacked effectiveness. We played a good game. I prefer euphoria to defeat.”

Barcelona have signed Jules Kounde but they have yet to register the former Sevilla centre-back as they need to make space in their salary cap and comply with the LaLiga regulations.

Xavi confirmed that the club can’t register Kounde if they don’t offload players first.

“We are still waiting,” added Xavi.

“He is our priority and we will see if he can be registered. He is a centre-back with a lot of class and experience even though he is 23 years old.

“At Barcelona he will have to prove every game if he can play. I see him more as a centre-back, but in an emergency [situation] he can play as a full-back. We need departures to register him.”

Xavi also commented on Casemiro‘s departure from Real Madrid to join Premier League giants Manchester United earlier this week.

“He is a player who has defined an era in football and at Real Madrid,” Xavi noted.

“They have signed players to replace him, but I don’t want to talk too much about that. They are decisions made by the opposition and I don’t get involved in that.”
