BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — A 23-year-old Denver man was arrested after a cyclist was killed in a Boulder County hit-and-run crash Sunday.
The suspect, Dante Johnson, was placed into custody Monday morning on an unrelated warrant, according to the Colorado State Patrol.
Johnson has been formally charged by the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office in relation to the fatal crash that resulted in the death of John Wilkinson on Sunday morning.
Wilkinson was cycling on N. 95th Street when he was hit and fatally wounded by a blue Toyota Highlander, allegedly driven by the accused individual, as reported by the CSP.
After the crash, CSP said the Highlander driver took off northbound on N. 95th Street and later abandoned the SUV in Clement Park in Littleton.
District Attorney Michael Dougherty emphasized the significance of such incidents in Colorado, stating that there are unfortunately numerous cyclists and pedestrians who suffer serious injuries or lose their lives each year. Dougherty reaffirmed the priority status assigned to handling cases of this nature within the jurisdiction.
Johnson was booked into the Arapahoe County Jail on multiple charges, including failing to remain at the scene of an accident involving death.
