ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A tragic overturn crash in St. Johns County resulted in the death of an Orlando man and injuries to six others, as reported by the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred around 10:15 p.m. Monday on Interstate 95 near mile marker 320.
According to the FHP report, the incident occurred when an SUV, traveling north in the left lane, swerved out of control. The vehicle spun counterclockwise, went off the road on the left side, collided with a guardrail, and ultimately overturned, coming to a stop on its roof in the inner lane.
The crash led to a devastating outcome where a 40-year-old Orlando man, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was thrown from the rear and landed in the southbound lane of I-95. Tragically, the individual was hit by passing vehicles in the aftermath of the initial crash, FHP detailed.
All other occupants of the vehicle — including the driver — suffered minor injuries. Troopers believe only the driver and an injured passenger were wearing a seatbelt.
All lanes were blocked for several hours following the crash, but eventually reopened.
The crash remains under investigation.
