Broadcaster Jim Kaat has sparked controversy afte he referred to New York Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes as “Nestor the Molester,” which comes as the 83-year-old Hall of Fame pitcher’s second offensive remark mid-commentary in the space of a year.

As Chris Archer of the Minnesota Twins struck out Detroit‘s Miguel Cabrera, Kaat proceeded to explain how Cortes had become one of his favourite pitchers during his breakout season with New York.

“‘Nestor the Molester,’ Nestor Cortes,” Kaat said.

“Angles and different speeds. He’s a pitcher.”

Cortes has earned the nickname “Nasty Nestor” among Yankees fans after going 5-1 with a 1.50 ERA to start the season.

On Thursday, he won the first game of a double-header against the Los Angeles Angels by pitching seven scoreless innings.

Jim Kaat’s previous controversial remarks

Kaat once stated that teams should attempt to “get a 40-acre field full of” players like Chicago White Sox infielder Yoan Moncada.

His remark about Moncada reminded some viewers of the unfulfilled promise made by the US government after the Civil War that freed slaves would receive 40 acres and a mule. Later in the game between the Astros and the White Sox, Kaat expressed remorse.

“Earlier in the game when Yoan Moncada was at the plate, in an attempt to compliment the great player that he is, I used a poor choice of words that resulted in an insensitive and hurtful remark,” Kaat stated.

“And I’m sorry for that.”
