Singles career
Jo Durie had a fruitful junior career, winning junior British titles on all three surfaces (grass, hard court, and indoor) in 1976. In 1977, she became professional and played her debut match at Wimbledon against the eventual champion Virginia Wade. Durie missed eight months of the 1980 season due to a serious back injury. She did, however, have a successful comeback in 1981, making it all the way to the fourth round of the singles at Wimbledon and the US Open while also earning her highest singles ranking to date of 31.
Her best season as a singles player came in 1983, when she finished sixth in the world and in terms of prize money. Durie, an unseeded player, defeated Tracy Austin and Pam Shriver en route to reaching the French Open semifinals. She advanced to the US Open’s Grand Slam singles semifinals later that year, but she ultimately fell to Chris Evert in straight sets. In 1991, they made history by being the first British doubles pair ever to win the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open. Both of these records continue to stand as of the year 2013. Together, Bates and Durie advanced to the quarterfinals of the mixed doubles competition at Wimbledon an additional three times, in 1986, 1990, and 1993. Additionally, as reigning winners of the Australian Open in 1992, they competed well enough to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Throughout her career, Durie would compete in a total of eighteen finals for the women’s doubles event and become victorious five times. In addition to her victories at the Grand Slams in 1987 and 1991, her most successful year as a doubles player was 1983. That year, she competed in six finals and emerged victorious three times. She is one of the very few players to have a winning record against Steffi Graf and currently holds a lead over her opponent with a score of 4–3 in head-to-head competition. Following her retirement from the professional tour, Durie underwent heart surgery to correct a problem for which she had first been prescribed beta blockers early on in her career.
