Who was Heritage Ajibola?
Heritage Ajibola, a student at Obafemi Awolowo University’s (OAU) Department of Linguistics and African Languages in Ile-Ile, Osum State, died after falling into a soakaway in her hostel.
On Wednesday afternoon, February 9, 2022, at Bver Hostel, Maintenance Hostels, she was alleged to have fallen into the septic tank by accident.
According to eyewitnesses, she was spreading clothing on a line with her friends when she fell through a hole leading into the soakaway and became stuck.
Heritage Ajibola of the Linguistics and African Languages department has been identified as the victim.
What was the cause of her death?
She has alleged slipped into the septic tank accidentally. She was stuck in there for several hours. Rescuers attempted to save her. They claimed that she had already fallen far into the soakaway before her friends could call for help. She was in the soakaway for about an hour, according to witnesses. During that moment, the Osun State Fire Service and the present maintenance crew attempted to pull her from the soakaway. The cause of the collapse was eventually established, according to the eyewitness. Termites had destroyed the wood, which was used to conceal the soakaway.
Ogunperi Taofeek Olalekan, the students’ organization president, confirmed her death in a statement. “This incident is regrettable. The Union mourns her. May her soul rest in peace. May God give her family, friends, and coursemates the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. It must be noted that Heritage’s death was avoidable if the soakaway system was constructed correctly and covered. It is saddening that this has happened despite students’ enormous amounts of money for rent. The Management of the Hostel must answer for the death of Heritage. The Union is immediately demanding justice for Heritage to forestall a possible reoccurrence of this.”
According to a statement sent to Daily News by University Public Relations Officer Abiodun, the student Auibola Heritage Ayomikun was a resident of BVER hostel, one of the private rum hostels in the students’ village Olarewaju. The regrettable situation mourned the university management, he continued. When the news reached management, it quickly called the firefighters from the institution, Osun State, and the OAU Teaching Hospital, who worked together to get the student out. He stated that the girl was taken out of the hole right away. She was rushed to the University of Arizona Teaching Hospitals Complex, where she was pronounced dead.

What steps are implemented by university administrations?
According to Olarewaju, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, who led the rescue team to the location, appealed to the students to be calm and law-abiding, adding that the police had inspected the situation briefly and investigations had begun.
The VC also committed to look into the circumstances surrounding the student’s death and impose appropriate sanctions on those involved or whoever is determined to be the perpetrator. It is a really serious topic to tackle; after all, it is about student safety. Parents are concerned about the safety of their children in the hostel. As a result, the college must reassure parents by assuring their children’s future.
