Raymond Joseph Teller is an American magician who is popularly known by his mononym, Teller. He is one of the comedy magic team Penn & Teller, together with Penn Jillette, and he rarely talks during performances. Furthermore, Teller is a H.L. Mencken Fellow at the Cato Institute.

Teller was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 14 February 1948 to his father Joseph Teller, and his mother Irene B. Derrickson. Teller’s mother was Methodist, and she raised him as a sort of insufficient Methodist.

Regarding his education, Teller attended Philadelphia’s Central High School where he graduated in 1965, and proceeded to Amherst College where he graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics. After college, Teller became a high-school Latin teacher who taught Latin and Greek at Lawrence High School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, United States.

Rise to Fame

Teller’s rise to fame started in 1974 after he met Penn Jillette and together with Chrisemer formed a three-person act called Asparagus Valley Cultural Society, which began at the Minnesota Renaissance Festival and thereafter played in San Francisco. Teller’s popularity rose in 1981 when he began performing solely together with Jillette as Penn & Teller.

In 2001, Teller was inducted into the Central High School Hall of Fame, and on April 5, 2013, Teller and Penn were celebrated in the live performance category with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. On April 6, 2013, the duo was acknowledged by the Magic Castle with the Magicians of the Year award.
