Boyd was born on October 6, 1959, in Meridian, Mississippi. He went to Meridian High School (Mississippi) where he studied and graduated. Afterward, he joined Jackson State University, where he likewise graduated. Here, he was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 16th round of the 1980 amateur draft.
