Collymore was born at Groundslow Hospital, Tittensor, Staffordshire on January 22, 1971, to an English mother and a Barbadian father. He grew a passion for football as a child and grew as a fa of Aston Villa.

Collymore began playing at an early age as a center forward for Cannock Peelers and Penkridge Juniors, before beginning his professional career as a trainee with Walsall, and later Wolverhampton Wanderers. He was subsequently released and signed for then Conference team, Stafford Rangers.
