Marino Franchitti, his younger brother, is also a well-known racing driver. He attended Stewart’s Melville College in Edinburgh and grew interested in karting during his time there.

In December of 2001, Dario Franchitti married Ashley Judd, a well-known American actress. However, 12 years later, in 2013, they divorced. He married Eleanor Robb in 2015, after dating her for a few years. Sofia (born in 2015) and Valentina (born in 2016) are their two daughters (b. 2019).

Career
Early in his career, Dario Franchitti won the Scottish Junior Championship in 1984, the British Junior Championships in 1985 and 1986, and the Scottish Senior Championship in 1988. In 1992, he joined Paul Stewart Racing and moved up to Formula Vauxhall Lotus. He was voted the McLaren/Autosport Young Driver of the Year despite finishing fourth in the overall title in his rookie year.
The next year, he was able to win the event. He joined AMG Racing in 1995 and raced in the German Touring Car Championship and the International Touring Car Championship, finishing fifth and third, respectively. The next year, he finished fourth in the ITC. Mercedes placed him in the Hogan Racing team in 1997. In the same year, he made his CART Championship Series debut in the United States. In the 1999 CART season, he finished second.
Dario did, however, win the Vancouver Molson Indy in 2002 after only winning once at Cleveland in 2001. He joined the Andretti Green team in 2003 and raced in the IndyCar Series. He won his first IRL IndyCar Series race on July 25, 2004. Dario had a memorable year in 2007, as he not only escaped two major crashes but also won the IndyCar Championship. He temporarily raced in NASCAR in 2008 before returning to the IndyCar Series in 2009.
In 2009, 2010, and 2011, he won his second, third, and fourth IndyCar championships, as well as the Indy 500 in 2010 and 2012. He experienced a career-ending injury in 2013, after which he resigned from active competition due to the possibility of permanent paralysis. However, he remained a part of Ganassi Racing by working as a competition director. In 2007 and 2008, he also raced in NASCAR. He’s also competed in the Sebring 12 Hours.
