Lancaster High School was Dewayne Dedmon’s alma mater. He was tall and muscular, with an athletic build, but he didn’t start playing sports until he was an adult. It was due to his mother’s religious opposition. He was an adult when he turned 18. He was 6 ft 8 in tall, which was ideal for sports. Dedmon attended Antelope Valley College after graduating from high school.

As a freshman at Antelope Valley College in 2009-2010, Dedmon helped the Marauders to a 17-14 record. He scored 6.6 points per game and grabbed 7.8 rebounds per game. He had 46 blocks and seven blocks on January 22, 2010, tying a school record. It was a battle against Chaffey College. Following that, he broke a bone in his forehead while playing against Victor Valley. He sustained an injury to his nasal cavity. Dewayne was badly injured by an errant elbow. He had to miss the final seven regular-season games due to his severe injury.

He set a career high with 18 points against Washington on March 6. Then he was suspended for the downtown Spokane inconvenience incident. It was a battle between USC players and patrons of a local bar. The Trojans finish the season with a 14-18 record after reuniting. Dedmon had a 2.1 block per game average. With 85 career blocks in 2012-2013, he set a new program record for the ninth season. Dedmon declared for the NBA draft on April 24, 2013, skipping his final year of eligibility.
