By participating in tug-of-war contests, Harjinder Kaur started following in the footsteps of her instructor, Paramjeet Sharma. A rope is tugged in the game of strength known as tug of war. She gave it her all and won the tug of war. Her strength was seen by Paramjeet Sharma, who urged her to pursue a career in weightlifting. She began lifting weights when she was a teenager. Harjinder had previously taken lessons from Surinder Singh in Kabaddi.
She took part in her first weightlifting competition in 2016. During the 2017 Women Inter-State National Weightlifting Championship in Kolkata, she won her first gold medal.
