Henry Cuellar:- The 2022 midterm elections officially began Tuesday night with a flurry of Texas primaries testing the strength of the left and right among the two parties — with the former endangering the future of conservative Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar.

Henry Cuellar, who was raided by the FBI earlier this year, struggles to survive his second primary contest in his South Texas district with lefty attorney Jessica Cisneros. With tens of thousands of ballots collected, he and Cisneros were neck and neck and on track for a head-to-head primary runoff in May.

Cuellar’s advertisements are all over the airwaves, with recent broadcasts saying that a vote for his progressive competitor, Jessica Cisneros, will result in open borders and that she is “supported by the defund-the-police campaign.” Another commercial has a more positive message, with Cuellar digging his fingers into a piece of Laredo dirt and declaring, “This property gave my family a chance.”

His brother is the sheriff. His sister worked as a county tax collector in the past. In town, he is commemorated with a trailhead and an elementary school. None of it is challenging to overlook. But the congressman is another matter.

The battle for South Texas is underway

Cuellar called the “King of Laredo,” defeated Cisneros by a mere 2,700 votes in 2020. Now she’s back for a rematch, and her backers include some of the left’s biggest stars, like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).

One of the few surviving Democrats in Congress who opposes abortion rights, Cuellar has outspent Cisneros by a 2:1 ratio. Still, he is running under the shadow of a federal probe that became public when law enforcement searched his offices last month. He hasn’t been charged with anything, but his campaigning has slowed in the last stretch.

The Republican Party intends to increase its statewide majority following crucial primaries

Former state party chair Allen West — formerly a Florida congressman — and former state Sen. Don Huffines are well-known or well-financed primary candidates to GOP Gov. Greg Abbott, seeking a third term. They never gained traction, though, and Abbott was re-nominated with ease.

Beto O’Rourke, a former congressman, is the Democratic nominee, has faced relatively minor opposition in the primary. Abbott, on the other hand, is the favourite heading into the general election, bolstered by reasons ranging from early polling leads to substantial fundraising (more than $62 million in the bank) to the Republican tilt in Texas and, so far this year, in national polls. Early polls show Abbott leading O’Rourke, and the incumbent has a significant money edge.
