The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction Day 1 is begun, but it has been delayed after auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsed due to low blood pressure in the middle of the bidding. However, everyone is relieved to know that Hugh Edmeades is alright, and the auction will resume at 3:30 p.m. IST.
Hugh Edmeades was appointed as the auctioneer for the IPL 2022 season and will organize the bidding for the 600 players that have enrolled this year.
Who is Hugh Edmeades?
Hugh Edmeades was appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2018 to conduct the IPL auctions, replacing the previous auctioneer Richard Madley.
The British auctioneer has over 35 years of experience and has conducted over 2,500 auctions throughout the world. The man has participated in various auctions, including international fine art, classic autos, and charity auctions.
According to his personal website, where he provides a thorough explanation, he has auctioned off over 310,000 lots of players, products, and other objects for a stunning total of 2.7 billion pounds.
In fact, he auctioned off 88 guitars belonging to Eric Clapton in 2004 and raised a staggering amount of $7,438,624. In 2016, he was also involved in the £2,434,500 sale of Daniel Craig’s Aston Martin DB10 from the James Bond film Spectre. Edmeades had claimed before the IPL sale that he had done a lot of two-day auctions in his four-decade career as an auctioneer, but never one that lasted for 12 hours. He even claimed that being on his feet for 12 hours did not bother him.
“During my 38 years as an auctioneer, I have taken plenty of two-day auctions, but admittedly, none lasting a potential 12+ hours. However, I am not at all fazed by the prospect of being on my feet for up to six hours each day. Mentally and physically, I will be splitting the sessions into “bite-size pieces” and taking the opportunities to regroup during the breaks in the auction,” According to InsideSport, Hugh Edmeades stated.
During the two-day mega auction in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13, he will auction a total of 600 cricketers in the IPL 2022 mega auction. There are 229 capped players in the pool, 364 uncapped players, and seven players from Associate Nations.
