Rockefeller was elected to the United States Senate in 1984 by defeating John Raese; he was re-elected in 1990, 1996, 2002, and 2008.

He also chaired the Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee three times each during his time in office.

He thought about running for president in 1992 while serving as the finance chairman for the Democratic Party. Rockefeller made the choice to support Democratic nominee Bill Clinton. He also regularly discussed the war in Iraq while serving as the chairman of the illustrious Senate Intelligence Committee.

Rockefeller visited Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria on diplomatic business in 2002. During which he shared his personal opinions about the military plans of the United States with the leaders of those nations. He cast one of 77 senators’ votes in favor of the Iraq Resolution the same year.
