Russia-Ukraine War: the port city of Ukraine, Kherson fell to the Russians

On Wednesday the southern port city of Ukraine, Kherson fell to the Russians, residents say that the forces have started to impose new rules in the city. As Russia started its invasion of Ukraine and since the war continues for a week, Russia gains control over the major urban city of Ukraine, Kherson yesterday (Monday, March 2, 2022). The economic center, Kherson which is the southern urban center of Ukraine is the first city where Kyiv has lost its control.

The residents of Kherson are worried and say that they cannot provoke them as the Russian forces have started implementing its new rules and regulations on the captured city. The mayor of Kherson, Igor Kolykhaiev has imposed a night curfew along with some more restrictions in the port city.

The urban city which counts a population of 2,50,000 people has been imposed a night curfew starting from 8 pm in the night to 6 am in the morning. Other restrictions in the city include moving in the streets only for emergency purposes like food and medicine and not moving in the city with a group involving more than two people.

After the city fell to the Russian forces, Igor Kolykhaiev mentioned in his Facebook post how they are trying to hold the discussion with the forces where he addressed them as “armed guests”.

He added, “We had no weapons and were not aggressive. We showed that we are working to secure the city and are trying to deal with the consequences of the invasion. We are having huge difficulties with the collection and burial of the dead, the delivery of food and medicine, the collection of garbage, the management of accidents, etc.” The citizens of Kherson were afraid to move out of their home but after the rules imposed by the mayor, they are moving out to buy food.

One of the citizens of Kherson on interviewing said how the citizens are against the war but have no choices as they are asked to abide by the new rules. The mayor also quoted that they have not made any promises to the Russian troops and asked them to maintain peace in the city by not killing any resident of Kherson despite the fell.

He also claimed that as far as they have their country’s flag flying over them, the new rules implemented by the Russians need to be followed. " So far so good. The flag flying above us is Ukrainian. And for it to stay that way, these requirements must be met," mentioned Mayor Igor in his Facebook post.
