Who was Stephen F. Campbell?
Stephen F. Campbell was a beloved member of The Walking Dead’s family, and in the season 11 midseason premiere, he was honoured with a title card.
According to a Facebook post, he died on November 4, 2021, at the age of 65, at his home in Winter Park, Florida. Campbell was a father of five who was born in West Orange, New Jersey and attended college in Florida before deciding to settle in the Sunshine State. He was a well-known cinematographer who has worked in the entertainment industry since the 1980s.
According to his family, Campbell was a loving husband, father of five children, and acclaimed cinematographer. He is survived by his five children: Aubrie Canfield, Ian Campbell, Cameron Ilan, Fiona Campbell, and Riley Campbell, as well as his wife Pamela and three young grandkids.
Stephen Campbell, who worked as a camera operator and director of photography on The Walking Dead for seven seasons, has passed away. Campbell died on November 4 at his home in Florida, according to his daughter, Aubrie. His credits include The Punisher and Zombieland. The cause of death has not been revealed. The original Season 10 finale of The Walking Dead, “A Certain Doom,” which premiered October 2020 on AMC, was Campbell’s most recent credit as director of photography. Campbell’s first appearance on the zombie drama was in the Season 4 episode “Dead Weight” in 2013, as a C camera operator.
“For seven seasons of zombies and apocalyptic mayhem, he created genre-defining imagery for the hit television show. He was so, so proud of that work [on The Walking Dead],” his daughter Aubrie Campbell Canfield confirmed in her Facebook post.
“Stephen was a Florida filmmaker,” wrote his daughter Aubrie Campbell Canfield in a Facebook post. He learned his craft, developed his talents, and built his career working alongside the women and men in the southern market.”
Campbell got his big start as a camera assistant on Michael Jackson’s Thriller World Tour in 1984. He went on to tour with Jackson again in 1988 before spending the following 30 years in Florida working on various films and television shows. In 2013, the cameraman relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, to work on The Walking Dead, where he spent seven seasons.
He is claimed to have been “very pleased with that job” as part of his responsibilities, which included creating “genre-defining visuals.”
Following Campbell’s death, several members of the cast and crew of The Walking Dead paid tribute to him by sharing memories and photos with him.
“Stephen Campbell, longstanding Walking Dead director of photography, was a great person, a magnificent artist, & a force of calm, serenity, & warmth on set,” The Walking Dead executive Scott M. Gimple posted on Twitter.
“It was a pleasure to work with him, and I am grateful.” His work will continue, and his generosity will impact the lives of those who knew him.”
Current showrunner Angela King wrote on Instagram, “RIP Stephen Campbell. Steve, you were a remarkable human. A kind and steady presence on our #TWD set.
“Over 7 seasons, I never once saw you lose your patience. Your smile brightened our days. We loved meeting your beautiful family over the years.
“It was wonderful to see you move up from Camera Op to DP. And when I moved up too, I cherished the time we spent talking about light and colour and movement and frames.
“You were an artist. But also a consummate professional. Thank you for being the kind of role model that proved you can be both. You are gone too soon but have left an indelible mark on the hearts of the #TWDfamily. May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest [sic].”
