Jazz Janewattananond is a Thai professional golfer who participates in Asian and European tours. Janewattananond turned pro in December 2010. In September 2011 he played in his first Japan Golf Tour event, the 2011 Asia-Pacific Panasonic Open, where he made the cut and finished tied for 65th.

Janewattananond achieved the first victory of his career on the Asian Tour in February 2017 at the Bashundhara Bangladesh Open. He won again during the 2018 season at the Queen’s Cup in his home county, Thailand. He also qualified for the 2018 Open Championship but failed to make the cut.

In January 2019, Janewattananond won the SMBC Singapore Open by two shots, a tournament co-sanctioned by the Japan Tour and the Asian Tour. This victory took him to the world’s top 100 and secured him a place in the 2019 Open Championship. His position in the world top 100 also earned him a place in the 2019 PGA Championship, where he finished tied for 14th.

He had been tied for second after three rounds, but a final round 77 left him on the field. He won three more Asian Tour events in 2019, winning the Kolon Korea Open in June, the BNI Indonesian Masters, and the Thailand Masters in December. His victory at the Indonesian Masters took him into the world’s top 50 for the first time and earned him a spot in the 2020 Masters Tournament.

Jazz Janewattananond hits bunker from the knees during the Open

The flexibility and the ability of a golfer to adapt to difficult terrain are some of his most important attributes. But on Saturday at the Open, Thai golfer Jazz Janewattananond took that to another level.

On the 11th par three at Royal St. George’s, the 25-year-old hit his tee shot in the bunker to the left of the green. His ball ended up too close to the bunker wall for him to stand up and swing comfortably for his second shot, so he had to improvise.

With her club in his hands, Janewattananond clambered over the bunker with his ball a few feet lower, swaying while he was on his knees. Despite having to play from this unorthodox playing base, Janewattananond proved that he was up to the task, as his shot ended just a few feet from the flag.

The excellent approach shot allowed him to recover to make a par and move to the next hole without taking too much blow. And just hours after he finished his third round, Janewattananond posted a video on Instagram of him showing that he had practiced that exact shot in the chipping practice area beforehand.

“Sometimes you practice the right shot at the right time,” said the world No. 144.
