Economists.co.za was established in 2005 by Schüssler. He has been named South African Economics expert of the Year two times. He was a part of many competitions, and he always was in the top five. He was survived by his wife Greta and son Rudi.
Schüssler’s work contributed more than three decades, initiating with Transnet and continuing with Treasury, FBC Bank, EW, and SAA.
“His research also resulted in the development of unique indicators for the South African economy, which is one of his great legacies for the South African economic sector,”
Initially, he created provincial economic measures of success, the BETI, all of which are published month by month, as well as provided helpful, quick and efficient data on the condition of the SA economic system.
“He left an indelible mark as an economist. Those of us who knew him and worked closely with him will feel his loss for years to come,” Shergeran Naidoo, BankservAfrica’s head of stakeholder engagement, explained.
Piet Croucamp, an economist and friend, described Schüssler as a never-ending source of advantageous knowledge.
“He would source from sites and places that were so obvious but so many would miss. He would quote Statistics SA. And you would wonder where he found the info and he found it where you missed it. It’s what he did with the information,”
