Since the dawn of music videos, pop stars and rockers alike have been giving their significant others starring roles.
Back in the early days of MTV, Billy Joel cast Christie Brinkley in the video for “Uptown Girl,” which debuted in 1983. The duo were just friends at that point, having met earlier in the year in St. Barts, but two years later, they tied the knot.
“I tried to look like me on an album cover,” the “Piano Man” singer recalled in 1986, describing his first meeting with his future wife. “I gave it every angle I could. … The music was the key to the introduction.”
Brinkley and Joel split in 1994, but the tradition of couples appearing in music videos together lived on. In 1995, the late Michael Jackson made headlines when he appeared in a semi-nude scene with his then-wife, Lisa Marie Presley, in the “You Are Not Alone” video. The pair divorced the following year, but the video remains online.
The sets of music videos have also served as a great place to meet future partners, as Britney Spears and Sam Asghari proved in 2016. The couple met while filming the “Toxic” songstress’ video for “Slumber Party,” which also featured Tinashe.
According to the model, Spears herself chose him for the role and later introduced herself on set. “She said, ‘Hi, I’m Britney,’ and I said, ‘I’m sorry. What’s your name again?’” Asghari told Men’s Health in 2018. “I tried to be funny. I don’t think anybody got it.”
They quickly got past the awkwardness, though, and started chatting about their favorite things to eat. “Then text messages and next thing you know, just like a normal couple,” he recalled.
Some couples, meanwhile, have made their music video debut before publicly confirming their relationship. Megan Fox starred in Machine Gun Kelly‘s “Bloody Valentine” in May 2020, but the couple weren’t spotted kissing in public until one month later. After photos of the duo’s PDA appeared online, the singer tweeted, “I’m calling you my girlfriend, what the f—k,” referencing one of his own songs.
Three months later, the Transformers star made several cameos in “Drunk Face,” another of her beau’s videos. She also lent her voice to one of the interludes on MGK’s Tickets to My Downfall album. “I burn other memories just to make room for those ones,” the rapper says on the track where Fox speaks. “Because also if the world was coming to an end, I don’t wanna close my eyes without feeling like I lived.”
