On Oct. 21 of 2021, tragedy struck the set of Rust in New Mexico when Alec Baldwin discharged a prop firearm that had a live round in it, killing the film’s director of photography Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.
At the time, a spokesperson from Rust said in a statement: “The entire cast and crew has been absolutely devastated by today’s tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Halyna’s family and loved ones. We have halted production on the film for an undetermined period of time and are fully cooperating with the Santa Fe Police Department’s investigation. We will be providing counseling services to everyone connected to the film as we work to process this awful event.”
The Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies are still investigating what happened, with Carmack-Altwies saying criminal charges are certainly possible.
As for Baldwin, the actor and producer on the Western said not a day goes by where he doesn’t think about what happened, but he won’t let negativity “destroy” him. “This has been, surely, the worst situation I’ve ever been involved with, and I’m very hopeful that the people in charge with investigating this whole thing get to the truth as soon as possible,” Baldwin said in a video posted to his Instagram in January 2022. “No one wants the truth more than I do.”
