The 2022 BAFTA film awards ceremony has begun.
The British Academy has cranked the glitz and glamour at London’s Royal Albert Hall up several notches as it welcomes the return to an in-person event having gone virtual in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rebel Wilson — who stole the show while presenting the best director category at the 2020 awards — has been given full hosting duties, while Shirley Bassey is kicking things off by singing a James Bond theme in celebration of the franchise’s 60th anniversary. Lady Gaga, Benedict Cumberbatch, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Millie Bobby Brown, Rege Jean-Page, Sophie Turner, Barbara Broccoli, Aaron Sorkin and Jessie Buckley are among the guests.
Leading the pack of films going into the night is Denis Villeneuve’s epic sci-fi spectacle Dune, with 11 nominations, dominating the craft categories and also landing a best film nod. Meanwhile, Jane Campion’s gothic Western The Power of the Dog — which triumphed at the DGA Awards on Saturday night — has eight, including three in the performance categories (for Cumberbatch, Jesse Plemons and Kodi Smit-McPhee) and Kenneth Branagh’s semi-autobiographical ode to his childhood, Belfast, has six.
