The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced on Tuesday that Warner Bros.’ Barbie will receive the Gotham Global Icon & Creator Tribute at the 2023 Gotham Awards.

Co-written and directed by three-time Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig, Barbie is the top-grossing film of the year, and the honor is the first major accolade it’s received as it enters the best picture Oscar race.

“Across the globe, audiences have fallen in love with the inventive world of Barbie and its razor-sharp original script, dynamic filmmaking, emotional and hilarious performances, vibrant set and costume designs, and electrifying original music,” said Gotham executive director Jeffrey Sharp in a statement. “The Barbie creative team took Mattel’s beloved icon and turned it into a cinematic tour de force. We are thrilled to recognize this extraordinary film, the creatives who brought it to the screen and their unique take on the iconic doll at the center of it all.”

The Icon & Creator Tribute was created for this year’s Gotham Awards in order to recognize cultural icons and the filmmakers responsible for bringing that icon’s story to life. The tribute honors and celebrates the creative team behind Gerwig’s film — a list that includes three-time Oscar-nominated co-writer Noah Baumbach, three-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, six-time Oscar-nominated production designer Sarah Greenwood, six-time Oscar-nominated set decorator Katie Spencer, two-time Oscar-winning costume designer Jacqueline Durran, editor Nick Houy, visual effects supervisor Glen Pratt, music supervisor George Drakoulias and Oscar-winning composing team Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt.

Gerwig has earned three Gotham Awards nominations over her career — one as an actor for her breakthrough performance in Baumbach’s Greenberg, and then as a writer-director with nominations for breakthrough director and best screenplay for Lady Bird.

The Gotham Awards previously announced that Bradley Cooper’s Maestro will receive the Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute, Michael Mann’s Ferrari will receive the Icon & Creator Tribute for Innovation, Rustin will receive the Gotham Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute for Social Justice and Ben Affleck’s Air will receive the Visionary Icon & Creator Tribute.

The 33rd Gotham Awards will take place on Nov. 27 at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City.
