Camila Mendes, Rudy Mancuso Connect in Prime Rom-Com

Camila Mendes learns about the unusual melodies going on in Rudy Mancuso’s head in the first trailer for Música.

Mancuso co-wrote, directed and stars in the romantic-comedy feature from Amazon MGM Studios that is loosely based on his real life. Also starring J.B. Smoove, Francesca Reale and Mancuso’s mom Maria Mancuso, the film hits Prime Video on April 4 and focuses on Rudy (Mancuso), a New Jersey-based street performer who experiences synesthesia, causing him to interpret everyday sounds as complex rhythms.

Rudy is in an up-and-down relationship with his longtime girlfriend (Reale) and living with his mother when he is intrigued by Isabella (Mendes), whom he meets at a fish market.

“For as long as I can remember — everyday regular sounds, I turn [them] into rhythm,” he explains to Mendes in the Música trailer.

Later, Mendes confronts him about his uncertain future. “Honestly, I don’t think you actually know what you want,” she tells him in the footage. “Well, I know what I want.”

Mancuso — known for posting comedy sketches to social media and for the YouTube channel Awkward Puppets — helmed the film from a script he co-wrote with Dan Lagana (American Vandal), with the pair also working on the movie’s music together. McG and Mary Viola serve as producers for the project that premieres at the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival on March 13 in Austin.

Mendes, who also starred in Prime Video’s recent rom-com Upgraded, told People earlier this month about her real-life romance with Mancuso, whom she met over Zoom during Música’s early days. She told the outlet, “It’s really attractive to watch your significant other direct a movie and lead in such a powerful way.”
