While a number of films and TV shows received repeated recognition from the Golden Globes when nominations for the 2024 awards show were announced on Monday, a handful of other awards hopefuls were completely left out of this year’s nods.

Michael Mann’s Ferrari, starring Adam Driver and Penelope Cruz; Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, starring Joaquin Phoenix (who was nominated in the musical/comedy categories for his role in Beau Is Afraid); and Ava DuVernay’s Origin, starring Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, a possible contender for a best actress Oscar nod, are just three awards hopeful movies with star directors and performers that failed to receive any nominations from the Golden Globes.

Similarly, other awards hopeful films didn’t fare as well as expected during Monday’s nominations. Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla and Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers each only earned one nomination. In the case of Strangers, Andrew Scott was nominated but Paul Mescal and Claire Foy were not and the film failed to land screenplay or director nods. The Globes doled out only two nods each for The Color Purple, which missed out on both a best picture musical or comedy nod and a nomination for Taraji P. Henson, and Saltburn, with the Emerald Fennell film missing out on the top category of best motion picture drama and best screenplay. American Fiction also only scored two nods but broke into the top category of best motion picture musical or comedy and best actor in a motion picture musical or comedy, missing out on expected nods in the supporting, director and screenplay categories.

Speaking of screenplay, a number of Oscar hopefuls were left out of the Globes’ picks, including Chloe Domont’s Fair Play, Samy Burch and Alex Mechanik’s May December and Bradley Cooper and Josh Singer’s Maestro. In the director category, expected nominees left out include Alexander Payne (The Holdovers), Todd Haynes (May December) and, surprising given the Globes’ support for both films, Anatomy of a Fall‘s Justine Triet and The Zone of Interest‘s Jonathan Glazer. And in the supporting actress film category Viola Davis (Air) and America Ferrara (Barbie) were both expected nominees who didn’t hear their names called.

In the animation category, Netflix was a surprise snub, with Nimona, Chicken Run 2 and Leo not getting nominated. And in the score category, it was surprising not to see nods for Barbie (despite the film’s dominance of the Globes’ movie nominations) and John Williams’ work for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.

In the Globes’ new category recognizing cinematic and box-office achievement, The Sound of Freedom was a surprise omission given the film’s $248 million worldwide gross, including $184 million domestically, while the inclusion of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert film was a bit unexpected. Sure it’s grossed $250 million worldwide including $179 million in the U.S., but it wasn’t clear if the movie’s unusual release strategy and the fact that it was a concert film meant it would still be eligible.

Other surprises among the film nominees include a best actress nod for Alma Pöysti from Fallen Leaves, The Boy and the Heron landing a best score nod and Bruce Springsteen breaking into the best song category for his composition for the indie She Came to Me.

On the TV side, hit limited series Swarm, from Donald Glover and Janine Nabers, starring Dominique Fishback, was surprisingly shut out as were the well-received Apple drama Silo and, continuing an unfortunate tradition of lack of Globes recognition for this show in its final season, Reservation Dogs. Similarly, acclaimed series Shrinking and Yellowjackets only received one nomination each.

John Mulaney’s Baby J was a surprise omission from the Globes’ new stand-up category as was a lack of nominations (again) for Harrison Ford (eligible for his roles in both Shrinking and 1923). In terms of specific categories, a number of acclaimed and awards favorite actors failed to receive nominations for their performances including Abbott Elementary‘s Sheryl Lee Ralph and Janelle James, Succession‘s Nicholas Braun and Ted Lasso‘s Brett Goldstein and Juno Temple, not to mention anyone else in Ted Lasso not named Jason Sudeikis or Hannah Waddingham.
