The rise and fall of pop duo Milli Vanilli is the subject of a new feature-length documentary coming to Paramount+.

Below is the trailer for Milli Vanilli, the story of Robert “Rob” Pilatus and Fabrice “Fab” Morvan whose pop superstardom was abruptly cut short following a lip synching controversy. The film — which made its world premiere at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival — seeks to flip the script on the scandal after 30 years of the duo being a punchline by providing new insight into the origins of the con.

Highlights include an exclusive audio interview with Pilatus in a rehab clinic that was recorded just two months before he died, never-before-seen archival footage, and interviews with the music industry executives who were involved with the deception — showing the con was a much larger deception with many more people involved than is generally assumed.

The German-French duo “Rob” and “Fab” went from impoverished upbringings to global R&B superstars when their first album in 1989 went platinum six times and their hit single “Girl You Know It’s True” sold more than 30 million copies. In 1990, they won the Grammy for best new artist. But their career was upended (and their Grammy was revoked) after revelations that they did not sing the vocals on their album.

The five reviews of the documentary that came out of the festival were positive, including The Hollywood Reporter‘s, which quipped, “Have I been thinking a weird amount about Milli Vanilli since watching this documentary? Reader, you know it’s true.”

Milli Vanilli streams on Paramount+ Tuesday, Oct. 24 and is directed and produced by Luke Korem, and produced by Bradley Jackson, MRC and Keep On Running Pictures in partnership with MTV Entertainment Studios.
