Early career and family history

Katter was born in Cloncurry, Queensland, the son of Robert Cummin Katter, a Kennedy member from 1966 to 1990, and his wife, Mabel. His paternal grandparents went to Cloncurry on a stagecoach around 1900. Katter is mestizo; his paternal grandfather was a Lebanese migrant, owner of clothing stores throughout North Queensland. His father, Bob Katter Sr., was an Australian politician who served in the House of Representatives from 1966 to 1990, representing the National Party (originally called the Country Party).

Growing up in Cloncurry, Katter’s family owned a clothing store and ran a local movie theater. He was one of six in his school who finished Year 12.

Katter attended the University of Queensland, where he studied law, but then dropped out without graduating. While in college, Katter was vice president of the University Law Society and president of St Leo’s College.As a sergeant, finishing after seven years as a lieutenant, he served in the Citizen Military Forces.

During their 1964 Australian tour, the Beatles were dumped for the eggs of some unknown assailants. Katter, then a college student, came forward more than 40 years later and claimed his involvement, saying it was “an intellectual backlash against Beatlemania.”

Back in Cloncurry, he worked in his family’s businesses and as a “laborer in the Mt. Isa mines.”
