Who is Oliver Manik ?
A 17-year-old student was arrested after the Broward Sheriff’s Office was notified this week of a threat on social media targeting Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, where 17 people were killed in a shooting at a school in February 2018.
According to BSO spokeswoman Claudinne Caro, someone reported the threat around 11 a.m. Wednesday and said the threat was made through a chat room on social media.
The BSO Threat Management Unit was then notified and detectives were able to locate the suspect on Thursday.
Caro identified the suspect as Oliver Manik, who she said is a high school student.
Principal Michelle Kefford notified parents of the threat Thursday morning via the following automated call:

“This morning, we learned of a threatening message posted on social media about our school. The Broward Sheriff’s Office, in collaboration with the Broward County Public Schools Special Investigation Unit, immediately investigated the threat and made an arrest.
“I want to thank everyone for their role in the safe resolution of this situation. I also want to remind all students and families how seriously each and every threat is taken. Parents, talk to your children to remind them that any threat, even if they think it is a joke, will have serious consequences. In Florida, a threat against a school is a second degree felony. Students also face school disciplinary action as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct Book, including expulsion.
“School safety is our entire responsibility. If you see something, say something. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at 754 322 2150.
“Thank you for your support and collaboration in keeping our school safe.”
Shooting
Disturbing to say the least for a school that lost 17 students and teachers in a mass shooting nearly four years ago.
Students learned of the threat Thursday.
The incident comes when Manuel Oliver, whose 17-year-old son Joaquin “Guac” Oliver was killed in the MSD shooting, traveled to Washington, DC, on Thursday in hopes of speaking with President Joe Biden about strengthening the gun laws of the nation.

He said the family was not living in the United States when the MSD massacre occurred, adding: “We lived in a country where schools are safe. In my country the schools are very safe, our mentality is very peaceful. He just wanted to appear among his friends, “Manik’s mother said.” It is not an excuse for his behavior. It is only an explanation of their behavior. All threats must be investigated, I understand that ”.
Detectives learned of the threat Wednesday morning and were able to locate the suspect.
“This should not be taken lightly,” said MSD student Xyanariaya Joseph. “I think now it has been taken lightly too often.”
Oliver Manik Arrested
Seventeen-year-old Oliver Manik was arrested and faces one count of written threats to carry out a mass shooting.

Seventeen people died after a gunman entered the school and opened fire, including Fred Guttenberg’s daughter Jaime Guttenberg.
