Who is Scarlett Bareham ?
A young woman who faced jail after slapping a man on the butt on a night out was acquitted today of s*xual assault charges.
Beauty therapist Scarlett Bareham, 20, of Bedhampton, Hants, had been accused of s*xually assaulting the clubber in front of her girlfriend while she was partying in Portsmouth last summer.
Charges
But that charge against Ms Bareham, which she had always vigorously denied, was dropped after prosecutors admitted there was insufficient CCTV evidence of the alleged crime.
The teenager had been partying with her friends Hannah Phillips, 20, and Fiona Hoyle, 19, in the Guildhall Walk area of Portsmouth late last summer, which is home to several nightclubs.
Instead, she admitted that she was angered by her role in the ‘unattractive’ punch that she quickly followed.
Victim
The trained massage and beauty therapist now faces 100 hours of community service and must pay her victim, Mark Palmer, £ 150.
The prosecution’s attorney, Beverley Cherrill, told the court that the incident was triggered after her friend Hannah Phillips ‘hit the butt’ of a woman, causing the women to giggle.
The prosecutor said she also made contact with a man’s butt, prompting a friend of the man to intervene.
“She said she didn’t hit his butt because her girlfriend was close to her and she wouldn’t like it,” Cherrill said.
Ms. Cherrill added: “Members of the public were attempting to intervene, including a whistleblower (male) seeking to interact with Ms. Bareham. To her annoyance, she kicked his ankle and brushed against him.
‘Other people would have feared for his safety as it was a fast-moving incident. Several people threw punches and kicks and Miss Bareham was one of them. ”
Fern Russell, defending, Bareham said, was on the “periphery” of the incident after getting involved only after “seeing something happen.”
The lawyer said of Bareham’s involvement: “She was out of line.”
Bareham admitted to being drunk
Bareham admitted to being drunk when she left a nightclub in May 2020, becoming more ‘aggressive’ when confronted outside by a woman who lectured the trio for hitting the man’s butt in front of her girlfriend.
The Portsmouth Crown Court heard today that in the fight that took place then, Bareham attacked another nightclub, Mark Palmer, who had been involved in the fight, kicking him and punching him in the head.
Prosecuting attorney Beverley Cherrill told the court: “Mr. Palmer was kicked in the ankle and she punched him in the face. She suffered some minor bruises in the temple area. Other people would have feared her for her safety.
Bareham today pleaded guilty to one count of skirmish. However, Ms. Cherrill dropped the s*xual assault charge because there was insufficient CCTV evidence and it was deemed “not in the public interest.”
Havants’ trained beauty and massage therapist Hants now faces 100 hours of community service and must pay Mr Palmer £ 150.
Judge William Mousley QC said today that she should be “completely ashamed” for attempting to hit and kick Mr. Palmer in the ankle.
In sentencing her, Judge Mousley added: ‘You played a fairly prominent role in the indiscriminate violence. You just didn’t care who you made contact with. ”
Crime
“She has pleaded guilty to the crime of skirmish,” she said. You are entitled to significant guilty plea credit, but not full credit. This was quite an unappealing show.
‘You were drunk, you should be completely embarrassed by the way you behaved that night.
He must apologize to the people who witnessed what was happening, particularly Mr. Palmer.
“ You were one of several people who got aggressive, you kicked and punched him and he suffered small bruises as a result of some of your actions.
“ He has had no problems since then; he can show that he has learned his lesson on how to return home from the nightclubs.

Miss Phillips, 20, who had initially been charged with s*xual assault for slapping the man’s butt, was released last month after accepting a conditional warning for the incident.
Miss Hoyle, 19, of Southsea, Hants, has pleaded not guilty to the fight and is out on bail pending her trial, which will begin in March of next year.
