Oscar for Best Actress at the 2002 Academy Awards

Berry won the Oscar for Best Actress at the 2002 Academy Awards for her performance. Speaking before the awards, Berry explained how difficult it was to act abusively towards Calhoun in the film, who played her artistically talented son who was overweight.

In a 2001 interview, Berry said: “It was much more difficult even than the love scene because [Coronji] was actually 10 [years old] and obese.

“I was worried that it would somehow hurt him emotionally, not just doing the scene, but in the future. So I talked to him a lot and hugged and kissed him a lot. He said, “You don’t have to worry about what you say; it can’t be as bad as the way they treat me at school.”

“But I heard that he is now the most popular kid in his school. So I guess [the movie] helped. ”

Hollywood landmark

Calhoun was only 10 years old when he appeared in Monster’s Ball, but he had no other acting credits.

The film focuses on the relationship between Leticia Musgrove (Berry) and Hank Grotowski (Billy Bob Thornton), who begin a relationship without knowing that she is the widow of a man (Sean Combs) whom she helped execute.

Calhoun played her artistically talented son, whom she abuses physically and emotionally because of her obesity.
