A 93-year-old female home resident with dementia was beaten to death with a metal cane by her mentally ill neighbor while recovering from the coronavirus, a jury found.

The Old Bailey heard how Rawson called 999 in a state of anguish and agitation after killing Ms. Dean.

He told the operator: ‘I think someone has been killed and I don’t know what’s going on. I think he might have done something wrong. ‘

Death

Ms. Dean had suffered multiple facial bone fractures and a traumatic brain injury, and she died in hospital. A bloodstained metal cane in her room had Rawson’s fingerprint on it.

At the time of the attack, Ms Dean had been isolating herself in her room while recovering from Covid. She had lived in the nursing home since June 2020 and her staff described her as “ very calm, lovely and calm. ”

Despite her age, she was independent and only needed support for her personal care, she told the jury.

Rawson moved into the next room at the end of December last year, having previously been detained under the Mental Health Act and been admitted to two South London hospitals since last July.

He had been charged with the murder of Ms. Dean, but he was found to be in no condition to stand trial.
