Who was Eileen Dean ?

A mentally ill man who beat a 93-year-old widow to death in a nursing home was locked up indefinitely in the hospital today.

Alexander Rawson, 63, used a crutch to attack the ‘kind and caring’ grandmother of five Eileen Dean in her room on Fieldside in Catford, south London, on January 3.

Subsequently, Rawson called 999 in a state of anguish and agitation, and said: ‘I think someone has been killed and I don’t know what’s going on.’

Ms Dean, who had self-isolated with Covid-19, suffered multiple facial bone fractures and a traumatic brain injury, and died in hospital.

Murder

The court heard how Rawson had moved into Ms. Dean’s next room in late December last year.

London was effectively on lockdown at the time after being placed under Level 4 restrictions, and the official national lockdown began days later, on January 4.

Previously, he had been detained under the Mental Health Act and had been admitted to two South London hospitals since last July.

Rawson, who suffers from a degenerative brain condition commonly associated with alcohol abuse, was unfit to stand trial for murder.

After a trial of the facts at the Old Bailey, a jury found that he had attacked and murdered Ms. Dean.

Today, Ms. Dean’s daughter Georgina Hampshaw cried when she told the court that she was “disappointed” by social services and the nursing home.

Statement

Reading a statement on the victim’s impact, Ms. Hampshaw described her mother as a kind, cheerful and energetic woman who “never lost her sense of humor.”

In her prime, Mrs. Dean had loved the music halls, where she met her late husband Charlie hers, and her ‘party piece’ was the Charleston dance, the court heard. .

After the attack, Ms Hampshaw told the court that the mother of three had been almost unrecognizable.

Ms Hampshaw struggled to understand how ‘such a wicked and callous crime had happened to her, especially committed in a nursing home where I thought she was safe and was being cared for and protected’.

She added: ‘My mother’s life should never have ended this way.’

Judge Alexia Durran served Rawson with a hospitalization order without a time limit.

The judge said he posed a constant threat to the public, citing threats of violence from him with a butter knife, scissors and a cane.
