Who was Janae Hairston ?
A 16-year-old girl from Ohio was shot and killed by her father after he thought she was an intruder who broke into their home, according to a 911 call obtained by NBC News.
Janae Hairston was fatally shot in the garage of her parents’ home on Piper Bend Drive, downtown, in Columbus, Ohio.
The girl, Janae Hairston, died Wednesday at a Columbus hospital about an hour after she was shot in the garage of her parents’ home on Piper Bend Drive.
In the 8-minute 911 call, Hairston’s mother tells an operator that her husband accidentally shot her daughter. The hysterical mother calls for an ambulance while a man in the background repeatedly says, “breathe, baby.”
“My husband made a mistake and shot her because he thought she was an intruder,” says the mother. “She was in our garage and my husband just didn’t know what was going on. Oh my God.”

“It is with great sadness that we inform our school community, Janae Hairston, a high school junior who passed away,” the school district said in a statement obtained by WSYX. “We extend our condolences to her family and our thoughts, prayers and support go out to them.”

The mother says she believes the teenager was shot in the chest by her. Both parents can be heard asking what the girl was doing in the garage.
Police arrived at the home about six minutes after the call was made.
The Columbus Police Division said in a tweet that no charges have been filed and that the case was referred to the Franklin County Attorney’s Office for review.
Shooting
The shooting comes days after a North Carolina police officer shot his 15-year-old son in the head in what authorities believe was an accident.
According to District Attorney Ernie Lee, the teen suffered a life-threatening injury Monday afternoon and was taken to a medical facility. The boy was still in critical condition as of Wednesday, the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office said.
The unidentified officer works for the Jacksonville Police Department and is on administrative leave.
