Who was Kimera Bartee ?

Detroit Tigers first base coach Kimera Bartee died Monday after she reportedly collapsed while visiting family in Nebraska over vacation.

She had no known health problems and the cause of her death is unknown, the team told the Detroit Free Press.


Bartee, 49, leaves behind her father Jerry, her fiancee Terri Slide, 43, and her children Andrew, Amari and Taeja. The family is currently in the process of making funeral arrangements.

Tigres general manager Al Avila released a statement offering his condolences to the family: “All of us in the Tigres baseball family were shocked and saddened.


“Throughout her time in our organization as a player and coach, Kimera was known as a kind-soul but intense competitor who did everything possible every day to lift those around him to do great things.

“While Tigres fans got used to seeing him in the first base coach’s area, Kimera’s impact on our ball club was much deeper and we will miss him deeply.”

Ávila added: ‘The thoughts and prayers of everyone in the organization are with Kimera’s family and friends, and her memory and spirit of him will never be forgotten.’


Bartee, a native of Omaha, began her baseball career at Creighton University in Omaha. He spent six years playing in the Major Leagues and four seasons with the Tigers.

Kimera Bartee Cause of Death

The Tigers announced Bartee’s passing on Twitter Tuesday morning.

“We mourn the passing of Kimera Bartee, who played for the Tigers from 1996 to 1999 and spent last season as the Tigers’ first base coach,” the team wrote.

Ávila and team manager A.J. Hinch is reportedly in contact with Bartee’s family and has offered her support to her loved ones.

“Like many in baseball, I was devastated by the news of Kimera’s passing,” Hinch said in a statement.

“From the start of spring training last year, it was clear that ‘KB’ was the epitome of a player’s coach, with an uncanny ability to build deep connections with anyone from a rookie to a 10-year veteran.

He added: “The sport has lost an amazing man, but more importantly, his family has lost a loving fiancé, father and son.”

Bartee spent four of his six MLB seasons with the Tigers and then spent the last two years of his playing career with the Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies.

After he ended his playing career, he coached the Baltimore Orioles, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Philadelphia Phillies and the Tigers.

Pirates owner Bob Nutting said in a statement that the organization is “deeply saddened” by Bartee’s sudden death.

‘He was a great person, whose optimistic demeanor and infectious smile always lifted the spirits of anyone who interacted with him.

“Our heart goes out to his family, whom he loved so much. He was too young and we will miss him very much.
