Former England and Wolves midfielder Ron Flowers has died at the age of 87.
Ronald Flowers MBE (born 28 July 1934) is an English former professional footballer, who played as a midfielder, and is most known for his time at Wolverhampton Wanderers. He was a member of England’s victorious 1966 World Cup squad.
Flowers was a non-player member of the England team that won the 1966 World Cup and received a winner’s medal in 2009.
He played 49 games for England and made 515 appearances for the Wolves between 1952 and 1967.
Flowers helped the Midlands club win three First Division titles and also won the 1960 FA Cup during his 15 years at Molineux.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of club legend and vice president Ron Flowers MBE at the age of 87,” said Wolves.
“A giant in the field and a gentleman outside of him. There will be many people remembering Ron today and all our thoughts are with those who knew and loved him.”

He made his debut for the Wolves at age 18 in 1952 and first played for England in a game against France in 1955.
Flowers scored in the 1962 World Cup in Chile and also made 40 consecutive appearances in England between November 1958 and April 1963.
He was also the first England player to score in the European Championship with a goal against France in a qualifying match at Hillsborough in 1962.
Flowers was a player-coach in Northampton Town after leaving the Wolves in 1967 and was also in Telford and Wellington Town.
He was awarded an MBE on the 2021 New Years Honors List.
In 1966, only the 11 England players on the field at the end of the 4-2 World Cup final victory over West Germany received medals.
But FIFA then awarded medals to all teams and non-playing staff members from all World Cup winning countries from 1930 to 1974 and Flowers, along with other players and staff from England, received his at a ceremony in 10 Downing Street in 2009.
Personal life
His younger brother, John Flowers, and his uncle, George Flowers, played more than 100 games professionally for Doncaster Rovers. In March 2017, Flowers’ grandson, Harry, was signed by Premier League Burnley with a contract until June 2018. His sister-in-law is former world darts champion Maureen Flowers, the wife of his brother John.
Flowers was named a Fellow of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in New Years honors 2021 for his services to football.
On November 12, 2021, it was announced that Flowers had died at the age of 87.
