Last year, a tearful Jackie Goldschneider opened up about her disordered eating.
Her biggest worry at the time was that her children had noticed her habits — and might internalize them.
Now, the The Real Housewives of New Jersey star is giving fans an update.
Jackie is “in active recovery” from her life-threatening disorder … but that doesn’t mean that she’s “cured.”
Jackie Goldschneider spoke to E! News about the eating disorder that has haunted her for the past two decades.
She fully admitted that she “would not call myself recovered yet.”
Jackie then detailed: “It’s been about a full year that I’ve been in active recovery.”
“My relationship with food is so much better,” Jackie shared encouragingly.
“But,” she then acknowledged, “not nearly where I need it to be.”
It is always encouraging when someone has a realistic idea of where they are in a recovery process.
Jackie offered details about her day-to-day habits.
She shared that she is generally eating a lot more, but that there are exceptions.
Jackie did share that she follows “rules that make me feel secure and safe when I’m eating.”
It can be odd to think about someone setting “rules” for themselves when eating unless it’s an allergy concern.
But there are signs of this disordered behavior everywhere.
Ever notice calorie counts on menus? Now imagine that fixating on calories is only one component of unhealthy habits.
Meanwhile, Jackie’s therapist and nutritionist are hoping that she can move past the rules.
In the future, she will hopefully be able to eat intuitively.
“I’m not there yet,” Jackie confessed during the interview.
“I try to recognize my hunger cues and eat according to them,” Jackie described.
“And,” she continued, she tries to “stop when I’m not hungry anymore.”
Jackie admitted: “But I’m not to the point where I feel comfortable honoring hunger cues all day without a set limit.”
“The bigger issue for me is how I feel about my body,” Jackie elaborated.
“I have to get to a much better place with that,” she emphasized.
That, too, is a work in progress as she wears the right clothing for this scorching summer heat.
Jackie also praised the support that fans have sent her way since she spoke about her eating disorder on RHONJ.
“The amount of people who have reached out and told me it helped them was amazing,” she gushed.
Jackie added: “It is clearly my purpose on the show.”
