WHITE and mixed-race people live shorter lives than other ethnic groups in England and Wales, a report found.

And white men and women have higher cancer death rates than black or Asian people.

The Office for National Statistics studied 1.3million deaths out of 50million people between 2011-14. Experts branded the results a “surprise”, and admit they may have been changed by Covid.

Black African women lived longest — 88.9 years, on average — while mixed race men died nearly a decade younger with the shortest lives — 79.3 years.

Experts say the reasons are complex, pointing out that white people smoke and drink more, but South Asian and black people are more likely to live in poorer areas. Ethnic minority people are hit harder by diabetes, while white people suffer more from cancer.

Women lived longer in every ethnic group. White women lived longer — 83.1 years compared to 79.7 for men.

The King’s Fund health think-tank stressed: “Results pre-date the pandemic.

Its impact has reversed the picture for some ethnic minority groups, who now have higher overall deaths.”
