Every month almost five million patients in England have to wait longer than two weeks to see a GP, according to NHS data. But that can be a long wait if you are feeling unwell.
But if you are struggling to get a doctor’s appointment as a result of long wait times there might be another answer. For you might be able to get treatment or other help from your local pharmacy.
And this can work for a whole range of issues affecting everything from your eyes to your throat. So what health concerns a pharmacist can see you for?
Pharmacists can provide expert clinical advice and over-the-counter medicines for minor illnesses and injuries. They are all experts and have over five years of training in medicine use and can guide you on whether to seek further help from a GP or other healthcare professional when symptoms indicate a more serious condition.
The experts atLandys Chemisthave provided a list of services that pharmacists and chemists can provide to help alleviate long GP wait times. This is what they say:
What conditions can pharmacies treat or advise about?
-
Common Cold and Flu Symptoms: cough, congestion, sore throat, runny nose, fever.
-
Allergies: hay fever (seasonal allergies), allergic reactions (mild).
-
Minor Aches and Pains: headache, muscle aches, joint pain.
-
Digestive Issues: indigestion, heartburn, diarrhoea, constipation.
-
Skin Conditions : minor rashes, insect bites, sunburn.
-

-

However they warned: “It’s important to remember that if your symptoms are severe or if you have any doubts, it’s essential to consult with a doctor, call 111 or head to A&E if it’s an emergency.” Pharmacists can guide over-the-counter medications and minor illnesses, but they cannot diagnose more complex conditions.
